Understanding it and Treating it

 

Depression is a very common mental disorder in the United States. According to NIMH in 2016, an estimated 10.3 million U.S. adults aged 18 or older had at least one major depressive episode with severe impairment. This number represented 4.3% of all U.S. adults.

If you notice symptoms such as the following you may be experiencing depression:

 

  • Depressed mood most of the day
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed
  • Significant weight loss or weight gain
  • Trouble getting to sleep or oversleeping
  • Feeling that your thoughts are slower
  • Reduction in your movements
  • Loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthless
  • Inappropriate guilt
  • Trouble with concentration or indecisiveness
  • Thoughts of death
  • Suicidal ideation, with or without a plan
  • Suicidal attempt
